Usually explosion policies are an extension of a standard fire insurance policy. These types of policies may cover additional damage caused by fire and lighting. However there is optional extra coverage that will handle what is considered unlikely or uncommon risks. Sometimes explosion insurance will cover not only explosions alone but property damage protection from damage caused by riots, vehicle damage, airplane crashes, or civil disobedience events. Other perils that have been included in the past also include damage from fire, smoke, wind, and hail.
Be careful to fully understand what your policy covers. Some policies won’t cover steam boiler explosions since that is separate coverage, but they will cover propane fueled grills, oil furnaces, and aerosol cans explosions.
Explosion insurance policies may generally be for commercial or industrial use but there is limited coverage available for homeowners unless extra coverage is purchased.
